When AI conversational agents exhibit behaviors like understanding language, responding coherently, and simulating empathy, users may perceive them as having human-like understanding and capabilities. While this may enhance user engagement, it can also lead to risks.
When users anthropomorphize AI, they might place undue trust in the technology, believing it to be more competent or ethical than it actually is. This can lead to overreliance on the AI for critical decisions, which it may not be equipped to handle. Users may also misinterpret the AI’s capabilities, expecting it to perform tasks or understand contexts for which it is not designed, leading to frustration, miscommunication, and potential operational failures. Furthermore, emotional dependence can also develop, particularly among vulnerable individuals, resulting in unhealthy reliance and potential psychological harm, especially if the AI becomes unavailable or is discontinued. Users may share sensitive or personal information with the AI under the false assumption that the AI can empathize and provide confidential support, ignoring the fact that data might be stored or used by third parties.
Companies themselves may also anthropomorphize AI, overestimating AI capabilities or underestimating the need for human oversight. This can have costly consequences. In copyright law, for example, anthropomorphic thinking has led to problematic comparisons between human learning and AI training.
